I've been happy, for the most part, with my HP OfficeJet Pro L7780. It prints until the cartridge is completely out of ink, then it stops printing once the ink is gone. It will let me replace the cartridge mid-print and continue where it left off.
Of course, it gives early-warning messages WAY too early. Still, I've been very pleased with the toner usage. My biggest complaint is the driver. There was a driver update over a year ago that makes all of the pages print slightly skewed (rotated counter-clockwise on the page). HP won't release their old driver back to me, so I'm screwed until I buy a new printer. BOO!

I'm done with HP printers. I had an OfficeJet all-in-one that I got right after OS X came out. I had continual problems with it, and HP rarely released driver updates.

My printer, by default, uses color ink even when printing a black and white document in black and white mode. I kept running out of color toner even when I wasn't printing much color.
Finally I found an obscurely labeled option somewhere in the printer dialog, something about rich black printing if I recall.
